That&#8217;s 1,000 hours a year, or $28,000 in labor freed up to do other work (not headcount cut, redeployed to jobs that need a person).<\/p>\n<p>$45,000 divided by $28,000 a year is a payback of about 19 months, before you count any scrap reduction. Add a modest scrap improvement, say $4,000 to $6,000 a year, and payback moves closer to 15 to 17 months.<\/p>\n<p>For a $200,000 turnkey robotic welding cell, the math needs bigger volume. If it replaces two welders&#8217; worth of a repetitive weld cell (roughly $120,000 to $140,000 a year in loaded labor across two shifts) and cuts rework, payback in the 18 to 30 month range is realistic. Below that volume, the math gets hard fast. Run your own numbers before you sign anything, and if a vendor&#8217;s proposal doesn&#8217;t show the labor hours and volume assumptions behind their payback claim, ask for them.<\/p>\n<h2>Machine Tending vs. Robotic Welding: Which Pays Back Faster<\/h2>\n<p> Cobot machine tending on an existing CNC generally pays back faster than a robotic welding cell. The entry cost is a fraction of a welding cell, and it bolts onto equipment you already own and already have work for. A welding cell is bigger and more specialized, and it earns its keep on volume: repetitive welds, consistent joint geometry, and enough parts running through it to keep the robot working most of a shift.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re weighing a first automation investment, machine tending is usually the lower-risk entry point. Welding automation makes more sense once you&#8217;ve got a specific high-volume weldment eating labor hours and causing quality headaches.<\/p>\n<h2>When It Doesn&#8217;t Pay Off<\/h2>\n<p> Automation is not a fit for every job.
