If you run a small or mid-size shop and you’re looking at adding a robot for machine tending, welding, or part handling, you’ll run into two names fast: FANUC and Universal Robots (UR). Both build good machines. They’re built for different jobs, and picking the wrong one costs you money in wasted cycle time or an integration that never quite fits the cell you wanted. Here’s how to think about the choice.<\/p>\n
FANUC is an industrial robot maker. Their arms are built for speed, payload, and duty cycle first. A FANUC robot in a machine-tending or welding cell is a workhorse: it runs fast, it runs hard, and it’s built to run that way for years without much drama. It usually sits behind guarding, because it moves too fast to be safe working next to a person without one.<\/p>\n
Universal Robots builds collaborative robots, cobots, meant to work at a slower, safer speed right next to your operators, often without a fence. That changes the footprint math for a small shop. You don’t always need to carve out a caged cell, which matters if your floor space is tight.<\/p>\n
Both companies build good hardware. The decision isn’t "which brand is better." It’s which one matches your part, your cycle time, and your floor.<\/p>\n
This is where the choice usually gets made for you. If you’re tending a CNC lathe or mill with parts under about 10-15 lbs, and cycle time isn’t brutal, a UR cobot handles it fine and costs less to integrate. If you’re moving heavier parts, running high cycle counts all day, or doing continuous welding on steel that needs speed and reach, FANUC’s industrial line is going to outperform a cobot every time. Cobots are intentionally speed-limited for safety. That’s the tradeoff you’re accepting for the lighter footprint.<\/p>\n
Run the math on your actual part before you pick a brand. A shop that specs a cobot for a job that needed industrial speed ends up with a bottleneck at the robot instead of the machine. A shop that specs an industrial arm for light, low-volume tending pays for guarding and floor space it didn’t need.<\/p>\n
UR’s teach pendant is built to be picked up by a machinist or operator with no robotics background. Most shops get someone running basic pick-and-place or tending programs within a day or two of training. That matters if you don’t have a dedicated robotics tech on staff and you want your existing crew running the cell.<\/p>\n
FANUC programming has a steeper front end. It pays off in flexibility and speed once your team is trained, but plan on a real training investment, either sending someone to FANUC training or leaning on your integrator for support during ramp-up. If you’re going the FANUC route, ask upfront how much post-install training and support is included, not just the installation.<\/p>\n
UR cobots can often run without fixed guarding, but "cobot" doesn’t automatically mean "no risk assessment." You still need a safety review of the actual application: end-of-arm tooling, pinch points, part ejection, speed and force limits for your specific task. Skip that step and you’re running an unguarded application you haven’t actually verified is safe.<\/p>\n
FANUC industrial robots need fixed guarding, light curtains, or safety-rated scanners in almost every application. Budget for that hardware and the floor space it takes up when you’re comparing total cost between the two.<\/p>\n
Entry-level cobots typically land in the $25,000-$45,000 range for the arm alone; mid-range units run $30,000-$75,000; heavier-duty cobots can run $35,000-$90,000 and up. Add tooling, vision, and integration, and plan on another $5,000-$30,000 on top of the base robot depending on complexity. A fully integrated robotic welding cell, industrial or cobot-based, typically lands in the $150,000-$250,000-plus range once you include the welder, fixturing, and safety systems.<\/p>\n
FANUC industrial cells usually run higher once you add guarding, safety hardware, and integration time, but you’re buying speed and duty cycle that a cobot can’t match. The right question isn’t "which one is cheaper." It’s "which one pays back faster on this specific job."<\/p>\n
As a rule of thumb: if you’re tending one or two machines, running lighter parts, and want your own people running the cell without a robotics specialist on staff, start with UR. If you’re running high-volume production, heavier parts, or continuous welding where speed and duty cycle drive your margin, FANUC is the better long-term investment even with the higher guarding and training cost.<\/p>\n
A lot of shops end up running both over time: cobots for flexible, lower-volume tending, and FANUC for the high-run jobs that justify the investment.
